Martinsburg, WV (JK) – Berkeley County officials are warning residents who may have had contact with a rabid cat involved in several attacks in the Spring Mills area to seek medical attention.
The incidents occurred on June 2 and 3 near Clendenin Drive and Eveningstar Lane. Several individuals were scratched or bitten by the same feline and received medical treatment for their injuries.
The animal was captured by Berkeley County Animal Control and submitted for testing. Results later confirmed the cat was positive for rabies.
As of June 9, four victims had contacted the local health department regarding possible exposure. Health officials advise anyone who was scratched, bitten, or had any physical contact with the animal to contact a healthcare provider and the local health department as soon as possible to discuss rabies exposure and possible post-exposure treatment.
Anyone who believes they had contact with the cat or has additional information about the incidents is asked to contact the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office Animal Control Division at 304-263-4729 or 304-267-7000.
