FREDERICK, MD (JK) — A traffic stop in downtown Frederick Tuesday afternoon escalated into a series of crashes, a foot pursuit, and the arrest of a Walkersville man on numerous criminal charges.
According to the Frederick Police Department, the incident began around 2:15 p.m. on June 16 when a patrol officer conducted a traffic stop in the unit block of South Market Street. During the investigation, officers requested a narcotics-detection K-9 unit to conduct a free-air sniff of the vehicle.
Police said that as the K-9 handler approached and spoke with the vehicle’s sole occupant, the driver became visibly nervous and suddenly fled the scene. Authorities say the suspect struck three nearby vehicles while leaving the area. Officers did not pursue the vehicle at that time.
Investigators said the suspect continued north on South Market Street, allegedly driving with disregard for public safety and striking three additional vehicles before the vehicle came to a stop. The driver then fled on foot but was apprehended after a brief pursuit.
Four people, including the suspect, were transported to Frederick Health Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
A search of the vehicle led to the recovery of suspected narcotics and currency. Police also recovered an additional quantity of a controlled dangerous substance in the area where the suspect was taken into custody.
The suspect was identified as 35-year-old Demetreus Grayson Bowie of Walkersville.
Bowie faces a lengthy list of charges, including six hit-and-run-related offenses, five counts of malicious destruction of property, 11 counts each of first-degree assault, second-degree assault, and reckless endangerment, two counts of possession with intent to distribute a controlled dangerous substance, two counts of possession with intent to distribute within a school zone, fleeing and eluding, and attempting to elude a police officer by fleeing on foot.
Frederick Police also thanked community members who called 911 and provided information to officers during the incident. The investigation remains ongoing.
