Gaithersburg, MD (JK) – Montgomery County Police have charged a 17-year-old Washington, D.C., resident as an adult after officers recovered a loaded privately made handgun during an investigation at a Silver Spring apartment building.
According to police, members of the Third District Community Action Team were conducting proactive patrols around 8:57 p.m. on June 19 when a resident reported that several people had entered a construction area inside an apartment building in the 800 block of Sligo Avenue and were gambling in a stairwell.
When officers responded, they found the group throwing dice with cash on the ground. Police say one of the individuals, identified as Devonte Carlton Jr., attempted to grab a satchel as officers approached. An officer secured the bag and saw what appeared to be a firearm inside.
Police say Carlton fled the building but was chased through the neighborhood and found hiding underneath a vehicle in a parking lot in the 700 block of Sligo Avenue.
Investigators determined the weapon was a loaded 9mm privately made firearm, commonly known as a ghost gun. Police also said Carlton is prohibited from possessing a firearm because he is under the age of 21.
Carlton was taken to the Montgomery County Central Processing Unit and charged as an adult with fourth-degree burglary, obstructing and hindering, and multiple firearm-related offenses. He is being held without bond.
