A Frederick oncology practice and its owner have agreed to pay $1.45 million to settle federal allegations of fraudulent billing involving government health care programs.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Maryland, Progressive Oncology and Hematology and Dr. Mouhamad Bazzi allegedly billed Medicare, Medicaid, and the Department of Veterans Affairs for chemotherapy drugs they did not pay for, including medications supplied at no cost through charitable and grant programs.
The government also alleges the practice improperly billed for medication from single-use vials that was shared among multiple patients and for chemotherapy drugs that were prescribed but never administered. Federal officials say the settlement reflects ongoing efforts to combat healthcare fraud. The case was resolved without any determination of liability.
