A Maryland man is facing multiple charges after the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office says he helped carry out a scam targeting elderly victims.
Investigators arrested 29-year-old Junjie Wu of Gaithersburg, charging him with obtaining money by false pretenses, conspiracy to commit a felony, and wearing a mask in public. Authorities say victims first received fake computer alerts claiming their devices had been compromised and were directed to call what appeared to be Apple Support.
They were then convinced by people posing as fraud investigators to convert their savings into gold bars, claiming the money needed to be protected in a Federal Reserve account. Wu is being held without bond.
The Sheriff’s Office reminds residents that no legitimate government agency will ever ask people to buy gold, cryptocurrency, or gift cards to safeguard their money and urges anyone who believes they may have been targeted by a similar scam to contact investigators.
