Frederick, MD (JK) – The Frederick Police Department is warning residents about a phone scam in which callers are making it appear that calls are coming from the department’s non-emergency phone number.
Police say they have received numerous reports of scammers posing as one of the department’s sergeants and demanding payment to resolve a supposed legal matter.
Officials stress that the Frederick Police Department will never call to demand payment or request gift cards, cryptocurrency, or any other form of payment over the phone.
Because caller ID can be spoofed, police urge residents not to trust a phone number alone. Anyone who receives one of these calls should hang up immediately and never provide personal or financial information.
If you’re unsure whether a call is legitimate, contact the Frederick Police Department directly at 301-600-2102 using the department’s official non-emergency number.
