Baltimore, MD (JK) – Maryland health officials are reporting an increase in cases of cyclosporiasis, a parasitic illness that causes severe gastrointestinal symptoms.
The Maryland Department of Health has confirmed 32 cases this year, including 28 reported since May 1. Nationwide, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says 145 people in 17 states became ill between May 1 and June 16. Twenty people have been hospitalized, but no deaths have been reported. Investigators have not yet identified the source of the outbreak.
Cyclosporiasis is caused by the microscopic parasite Cyclospora, which is usually spread through contaminated food or water.
The most common symptom is watery diarrhea. Other symptoms can include stomach cramps, nausea, fatigue, bloating, loss of appetite and weight loss.
Health officials recommend washing fresh fruits and vegetables thoroughly, practicing good hand hygiene, and seeking medical care if symptoms develop. The illness can be diagnosed through laboratory testing and treated with medication.
