Back-to-school shoppers in Maryland and Virginia can soon save money during each state’s annual tax-free shopping holiday.
Virginia’s sales tax holiday runs August 7th through the 9th, allowing shoppers to buy qualifying school supplies, clothing, footwear, emergency preparedness items, and certain energy-efficient products without paying sales tax.
Maryland’s tax-free week follows from August 9th through the 15th. During that week, qualifying clothing and footwear priced at $100 or less per item are exempt from the state’s six percent sales tax, and the first $40 of a backpack is also tax-free. State officials say the holidays are designed to help families prepare for the new school year while supporting local retailers.
