A Hagerstown couple is facing serious charges following an investigation into the alleged abuse of a three-month-old infant.
The Washington County Sheriff’s Office says deputies responded to Meritus Medical Center on July 8 after medical staff reported the child had suffered injuries consistent with abusive head trauma. The infant was later transported to Children’s National Hospital in Washington, D.C., where doctors diagnosed a subdural hemorrhage and extensive retinal hemorrhaging.
Investigators allege 23-year-old Dante Nova caused the injuries. His 21-year-old wife, Isabel Arlene Nova, is accused of being aware of the injuries and helping cover up the alleged abuse afterward. Dante Nova faces multiple charges, including first-degree child abuse resulting in severe physical injury and first-degree assault. Isabel Nova faces charges including child neglect and several accessory-after-the-fact offenses.
Both are being held without bond.
