Montgomery County Police have charged a 17-year-old as an adult following a shooting that sent a 13-year-old boy to the hospital.
Authorities say the gunfire erupted around 6 p.m. on July 31 inside Westfield Wheaton Mall near a Cinnabon and a children’s play area where families were gathered. Detectives say Diego Rafael Turcios Avalos fired multiple shots at a group of teenagers before fleeing toward Dick’s Sporting Goods. An armed security officer ordered the teen to the ground and held him until officers arrived.
The victim suffered a gunshot wound to the ankle and is expected to recover. The suspect remains jailed as the investigation continues.
