State wildlife officials are expanding closures at Cunningham Falls State Park after another reported beaver attack.
The Maryland Department of Natural Resources says a 19-year-old fisherman was bitten Wednesday morning while in the South Beach Day Use area around Hunting Creek Lake. The victim sought treatment at Meritus Medical Center.
Officers captured the beaver involved, and it has been sent for rabies testing, with results expected later this week. It’s the second attack at the park since July 26, when a 13-year-old swimmer was bitten by a beaver that later tested positive for rabies. The state has now closed the Houck Day Use Area, the adjacent boat ramp, and portions of Big Hunting Creek while crews increase daytime and nighttime monitoring for additional beavers.
Officials remind visitors that beaver attacks are rare, but anyone who recently had contact with a beaver at the park should notify the Frederick County Health Department.
