As students across Maryland prepare to head back to school, transportation officials are reminding drivers to slow down and pay close attention around school buses, bus stops and school zones.
More than 600-thousand students rely on school buses each school day, but getting on and off the bus can be one of the most dangerous parts of the trip. Drivers are required to stop for school buses loading or unloading students. Passing a stopped school bus detected by an automated camera carries a 250-dollar civil citation.
If a driver is stopped by law enforcement, the violation can result in a fine of up to 570 dollars and three points on the driver’s license. Officials are urging motorists to stay focused, slow down and never pass a stopped school bus.
