Maryland State Police are investigating four separate fatal crashes that killed seven people across Maryland over the weekend. The crashes occurred in Carroll, Montgomery, Harford and Allegany counties.
The first happened early Saturday on Route 91 in Carroll County. Police say a Volkswagen Jetta left the roadway and struck an embankment. The driver, 21-year-old Garrett Reid Luber of Hampstead, was killed. Police believe impairment may have been a factor.
Saturday evening on I-270 in Montgomery County, a Ford Mustang traveling the wrong way in the southbound lanes struck a Toyota Camry head-on. Two passengers in the Toyota, 46-year-old Musammat Shamima Begum and her 23-year-old daughter, Areebah Jahin, both of Virginia, were killed. Three others were injured.
The Mustang driver, 32-year-old Jose Caballero Nolasco of Germantown, has been charged with two counts of gross negligent manslaughter, two counts of homicide by motor vehicle while impaired by alcohol and one count of life-threatening injury by motor vehicle.
On Sunday, 40-year-old Christopher Larry Grimsley was killed in a crash at Routes 152 and 147 in Harford County. Police say the other driver ran a red light. Impairment may have been a factor.
Later Sunday, three people were killed in a head-on crash on I-68 in Allegany County. Two were occupants of a Subaru, and the third was a passenger in a Volkswagen.
The Maryland State Police Crash Team continues to investigate all four crashes and is urging motorists to avoid impaired, distracted and aggressive driving.
