Two people are dead following a wrong-way crash on Interstate 270 in Montgomery County, and federal immigration officials are now asking Maryland authorities to hold the man charged in the case.
Authorities say the August 29 crash happened when a suspected drunk driver, Jose Antonio Caballero-Nolasco, allegedly traveled the wrong way and crashed head-on into a vehicle carrying four people.
Killed were 46-year-old Musammat Shamima Begum and her 23-year-old daughter, Areebah Jahin. A 62-year-old man and an 8-year-old girl survived and were transported to local hospitals.
Investigators believe alcohol impairment contributed to the crash. Caballero-Nolasco was hospitalized before being taken to the Montgomery County Detention Center.
He is charged with two counts of gross negligent manslaughter, two counts of homicide by motor vehicle while impaired by alcohol, and life-threatening injury by a motor vehicle. ICE lodged a detainer September 1. Homeland Security says he is an undocumented immigrant from El Salvador.
