The Maryland Attorney General’s Office will not prosecute officers involved in a fatal police shooting in Gaithersburg.
The shooting happened July 12th after Montgomery County Police received a 911 call about a man loading a firearm at a bus stop in the 9600 block of Lost Knife Road.
Officers from Gaithersburg and Montgomery County responded and encountered the suspect, later identified as Elliott Powers. Investigators say Powers pulled a 9-millimeter handgun from a backpack, loaded a round, and refused commands to drop it. Officers tried to de-escalate the situation and requested a negotiator while preparing to evacuate the nearby shopping center. Authorities say Powers then raised his handgun in the direction of officers, who opened fire.
Powers was pronounced dead at the scene, and no officers were injured. The Attorney General’s Independent Investigations Division found the officers did not commit a crime.
