The Frederick County Health Department is warning residents after a stray kitten found near Loys Station Park in Rocky Ridge tested positive for rabies.
Animal Control collected the kitten October first after it showed aggressive behavior, a common sign of rabies. The six-to-seven-week-old black-and-white kitten had a white mark on its head. Anyone who may have had contact with the kitten between September 17th and October first should contact their health care provider and the county health department at 301-600-3342.
People whose pets or livestock may have had contact should contact a veterinarian. Rabies is spread through infected saliva, usually by a bite, and can be fatal without timely treatment.
