A deadly shooting on Interstate 70 has resulted in a murder conviction for a 28-year-old Howard County man.
Jeffrey Diaz was convicted Wednesday of second-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder and other charges for the June 14th, 2025 shooting that killed 20-year-old Eduardo Alexander Alvarado Urrea.
Police say a GMC Sierra with six people inside was traveling east on I-70 near the Mount Airy exit around 11:40 p.m. when another vehicle fired multiple rounds into the truck. Investigators believe at least ten shots were fired. Urrea was hit in the chest and upper back and died after the truck pulled into a Shell station. The driver was also shot, and a third passenger was hurt by broken glass.
State Police say the group had attended an event at the Frederick Fairgrounds, where Diaz had an altercation with one of the occupants. Investigators later determined through cellphone mapping that Diaz’s Dodge Ram caught up with the Sierra shortly before the shooting.
Diaz was arrested June 29th, 2025, and remains held without bail awaiting sentencing.
