A federal fraud investigation has ended with guilty pleas from three Maryland men accused of stealing more than a million dollars through fraudulent U.S. Treasury checks.
Prosecutors say 49-year-old Tijuan Arrington, 47-year-old David Walters and 33-year-old Gregory Dean obtained legitimate Treasury checks intended for real people and businesses.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of West Virginia, the men created companies with names resembling legitimate businesses and obtained Employer Identification Numbers through an IRS system in Martinsburg.
They then allegedly used those numbers to establish business bank accounts, deposit stolen checks and withdraw the funds before the fraud was discovered. Investigators were able to stop some of the transactions before the money was successfully taken.
The total fraud exceeded $1.1 million dollars. All three defendants pleaded guilty and face up to 20 years in prison.
