The Food and Drug Administration is warning consumers not to eat certain oysters harvested by Virginia’s Little Wicomico Oyster Company because of possible salmonella contamination.
The oysters were harvested from the Little Wicomico River between September 18 and October 8 and distributed to Maryland, 15 other states and Washington, D.C., for sale to restaurants and retailers.
Health officials are investigating 27 reported illnesses across multiple states, including two in Maryland. Five people have been hospitalized. No deaths have been reported.
Consumers should not eat the affected oysters, and restaurants and retailers should not sell or serve them. Contaminated oysters may look, smell and taste normal.
Salmonella symptoms can include diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps. Anyone who may have eaten the affected oysters and develops symptoms should contact a health care provider.
