Maryland’s Office of the Attorney General is investigating a fatal police-involved shooting that occurred Friday afternoon, October 23, in Hagerstown.
According to the Attorney General’s Independent Investigations Division, the incident began around 4:50 p.m., when the Hagerstown Fire Department responded to an apartment fire in the unit block of Randolph Avenue.
Firefighters encountered an adult man inside the apartment and requested assistance from the Hagerstown Police Department.
When officers arrived, they established a perimeter around the building. Investigators say the man then ran out of the building toward the officers. Police issued verbal commands and deployed tasers before officers discharged their service weapons, striking the man.
Two knives were recovered at the scene.
Emergency medical personnel, who were already present, transported the man to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. No officers were injured during the incident.
The Attorney General’s Independent Investigations Division is asking anyone with information about the shooting, including cellphone recordings or private surveillance video, to contact investigators at 410-576-7070 or by email at IID@oag.maryland.gov.
The division generally releases the names of the deceased and involved officers within two business days of an incident, although that timeline may be extended when necessary.
Investigators confirmed that the officers were equipped with body-worn cameras. The division generally releases body-camera footage within 20 business days, but additional time may be needed to complete witness interviews, address technical issues involving the protection of civilian witnesses’ identities, or allow family members to view the footage before its public release.
The investigation remains ongoing.
