The national leader of the Veterans of Foreign Wars will be among the participants in Brunswick’s inaugural Rivers and Rails Marathon weekend on Saturday, November 14.
Cory L. Geisler, Commander-in-Chief of the VFW, will run the Veterans Challenge 5K, an event honoring military veterans. Geisler is a U.S. Army veteran who served from 2005 to 2012, including a deployment to Iraq. He was elected to lead the national veterans organization in July 2026.
The Rivers and Rails event features three races: a full marathon, half marathon and the Veterans Challenge 5K. The marathon and half marathon begin at 7 a.m., while the 5K starts at 8:30 a.m. in downtown Brunswick.
The marathon and half marathon courses showcase the area’s history and scenery, including the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers, the C&O Canal Towpath and historic communities in Maryland and West Virginia. The 5K features a challenging 3.1-mile course through Brunswick, with approximately 450 feet of elevation gain and stops near local veterans memorials.
BTS Software Solutions, a service-disabled veteran-owned business, is sponsoring the Veterans Challenge 5K. The company is also covering registration fees for participating ROTC cadets from McDaniel College.
Runners and walkers are welcome to participate in the 5K, which has no time limit. Every finisher receives a commemorative medal.
Post-race festivities at Square Corner Park will include live music, food trucks and awards presentations. A portion of the event proceeds will benefit Brunswick Main Street.
