More than 160 years after the Battle of Gettysburg, the sacrifices of the soldiers who fought to preserve our nation will once again be remembered in a moving tribute.
The Gettysburg Foundation is preparing for its 24th Annual Remembrance Day Illumination Saturday, November 21st, at Gettysburg National Cemetery. From 5:30 to 9:30 that evening, 3,512 luminary candles will shine on the graves of Civil War soldiers, while volunteers read aloud the names of those who gave their lives.
The free public event honors the dedication of the cemetery in November of 1863, when President Abraham Lincoln delivered his historic Gettysburg Address. As America celebrates its 250th anniversary, the illumination offers a special opportunity to reflect on the courage, sacrifice, and freedom these soldiers fought to preserve.
Volunteers are also needed to help set up the candles and clean up afterward. The event is free and open to everyone.
