County Executive To Introduce FY 2017 Budget On Friday

A proposed budget for fiscal year 2017 will be introduced on Friday, April 15th by Frederick County Executive Jan Gardner. The presentation will take place at 11:00 AM in the first floor hearing room at Winchester Hall.

Citizens can also watch the presentation on FCG TV, Cable Channel 19, or on webcast at http://www.FrederickCountyMD.gov/video.

“I think people will be pleased with the budget on Friday. It’s a fiscally responsible budget and it prioritizes  education, public safety and valuing people and county employees,” says Gardner.

After she unveils her budget, Gardner will give the spending plan to the County Council which will hold two hearings on it. One dealing with the Board of Education’s section of the budget will take place on Monday, April 18th beginning at 6:00 PM. The second hearing will be held on Tuesday, April 19th, at 7:00 PM. It will deal with the non-Board of Ed sections of the spending plan.

After that, the County Council will continue to review the budget. “They can only, by the charter, cut from my budget. But they can add to education,” says Gardner. “And if the majority wants to cut something and add something, I’m willing to entertain that; not on an individual council member basis, but if a majority decides it wants to move money from here to there, I’ll certainly talk to them about that.”

The County Council must vote on the budget by May 25th, or the proposed budget as submitted by the County Executive will become law.
