She is Karen Salmon, a 30-year educator.
BALTIMORE (AP) – The Maryland State Board of Education has chosen Karen Salmon to be the state’s schools superintendent.
The board announced the selection by unanimous vote on Tuesday. She will begin serving as acting superintendent on June 1 before officially taking the position on July 1.
Salmon spent more than 30 years an educator on the Eastern Shore. She started as a special education teacher in the Caroline County Public Schools.
Salmon became assistant superintendent Talbot County schools in 1997 and superintendent in 2003. She was named Maryland Superintendent of the Year in 2012.
Salmon joined the Maryland State Department of Education last August as assistant state superintendent for college and career readiness. She took over as interim deputy superintendent for school effectiveness earlier this year.
