Maryland State Police are investigating the apparent homicide of a Washington County woman. Sonya Smith, 55, was found dead Thursday morning in her home in the 23,000 block of Foxville Road in Smithsburg. Her body was taken to the State Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy.

State Police say troopers from the Hagerstown Barrack were dispatched to Smith’s home at around 11:00 AM at the request of her family to check on her welfare. They told State Police they had not heard from Smith in two days.

Authorities say the home was secured on the outside with no sign of any forced entry. Troopers had to force their way inside, where they found Smith lying on the bedroom floor with signs of trauma on her body. EMS personnel sent to the scene pronounced her deceased.

Investigators from the State Police Homicide Unit and Criminal Enforcement Division responded to conduct an investigation. They obtained a search warrant and before processing the scene. Evidence technicians were processing the home for evidence all afternoon.

Investigators continue to interview family members, friends and neighbors in the area.

No suspects have been identified.
