SMITHSBURG, Md. (AP) – The Washington County Sheriff’s Office says a pedestrian has died after being hit by a train on the CSX railroad tracks in the western Maryland town of Smithsburg.
Lt. Joel Footen says the incident was reported shortly after 1 p.m. Monday.
He says investigators are working with the state medical examiner’s office to identify the victim.
He says the collision was reported on West Water Street, which is state Route 66. The tracks cross the highway about a half-mile southwest of the town center.
Local police have not identified the victim, but the Hagerstown Herald Mail says it’s a female. No age was given.
The paper says the train consisted of 26 cars and three locomotives, and was making deliveries in the area.
