Larnell Lyles Trial Began On Monday

He’s charged with the murder of Brandon Brown.

(Frederick, Md.) (KM) The prosecution will start presenting its case on Tuesday in the trial of Larnell Lyles, 28, of Frederick. He’s charged 1st-degree murder, use of a firearm in a felony violent crime and illegal possession of a firearm following a felony conviction.

Lyles was arrested last year for fatally shooting Brandon Brown, 22, of Frederick. Brown was killed in June, 2015, as he was selling ice cream from an ice cream truck in the Lucas Village community of Frederick.

State’s Attorney Charlie Smith says jury selection began on Monday. “Jury selection took a long time. With murder cases, there’s an unusually large number of jurors just because of the strikes that each party can exercise are increased over normal jury trials,” he said.

Smith jury selection ended at around 2:30 PM, and both sides were able to present opening statements to the jury. He says the prosecution will begin calling its witnesses on Tuesday. “Of course, we have to prove beyond a reasonable doubt. But we’re confident we can do that,” he Smith says.

After the prosecution rests, the defense will present its case. “We hope to be able to have to a jury sometime around Thursday,” says Smith.
