It includes a new interchange at Watkins Mill Rd.
Annapolis, Md. (KM) $229.6-million has been set aside by Governor Larry Hogan to help ease traffic backups on Interstate 270 in Montgomery County. He also announced on Monday that $100-million dollars is being provided for the I-270 Innovative Congestion Management Project to improve travel times along this heavily traveled highway. Next year, the State Highway Administration says it will construct a new interchange at I-270 at Watkins Mill Road for a price tag of $129.6-million.
Hogan also says an additional $1-million for shuttle bus service will transport riders between Metro stations so that citizens can get to work on time, and move more efficiently while Metro repairs are taking place later this year.
“Our Administration is committed to finding the best ideas that offer real solutions, and I’m excited to see innovation in action when it comes to solving the problem of congestion on I-270,” says Governor Hogan, in a statement. “We are calling on the most creative minds in the transportation industry to step forward, as we continue our investment in critical infrastructure projects that will help citizens in Montgomery County, and all across the state.”
The I-270 interchange project will be advertised in the Spring of 2017, and construction will start the following summer, according to the Governor’s Office.
I-270 carries 79,400 vehicles a day on the north end of the highway, and 261,200 cars and trucks daily near the Capital Beltway.
