Frederick Man Charged With Killing His Father

He’s being held at the Adult Detention Center.

Frederick, Md. (KM)  The Sheriff’s Office has charged a man with killing his father. Garrett Barker, 18, was arrested on Thursday, charged with 1st-degree murder and use of a firearm in a crime of violence. He’s currently being held on a no-bond status at the Frederick County Adult Detention Center.

Corporal Amanda Ensor, spokeswoman for the Sheriff’s Office, says deputies and detectives responded to the 8,000 block of Runnymeade Drive in Frederick on Monday, July 11th at 4:00 AM after Garrett Barker said his father, Kevin Barker, 47, had shot himself.  Authorities say Garrett Barker was seen walking along Runnymeade Drive near the home he shared with his father. He told deputies and detectives that his father had shot himself inside their residence.

Initially, investigators determined the death to be a suicide. But, Corporal Ensor says, other details  came forward. “And receiving information from family members later in the week, family members and friends explained there was some suspicious activity with Garrett’s behavior,” she says.

Ensor says a lot of what Garrett Barker said didn’t add up. “His story was inconclusive. At first, he claimed that it was due to his father’s ALS disease, and some other issues that they had that evening,” she says.

Detectives determined that Garrett Barker had killed his father.
