Weinberg Center Speakers Series Lineup For 2017 Announced

One will be ‘Bill Nye, the Science Guy.’


Frederick, Md (KM) The 2017 Weinberg Center Speakers Series Lineup has been announced. Coming to Frederick next year are former pro-basketball player Kareem Abdul Jabbar, Elizabeth Smart , Dr. Bennet Omalu and former PBS-TV host Bill Nye.

John Healey, Executive Theater Manager of the Weinberg, says the Speakers Series has been around for five years.. “We try to present a very diversified group of speakers in order to offer the greater Frederick community the chance to hear some new ideas and some innovations going on in the world today,” he says.
Kareem Abdul Jabbar, who will speak on January 26th, 2017 at 7:30 PM, is a cancer survivor and bestselling author as well as a retired NBA player.

Elizabeth Smart will speak on February 23rd, 2017 at 7:30. She was abducted as a child in 2002, and was one of the most followed child abduction cases. She founded the Elizabeth Smart Foundation to help stop the brutal victimization of women and children around the world.

Dr. Bennet Omalu will speak on March 23rd, 2017 about his journey from humble beginnings in war-torn Nigeria and his  revolutionary discovery which made him one of the biggest disrupters in sports medicine. He will discuss the challenges taking on the NFL in insuring that the truth of about chronic brain injury is understood and prevented at all costs.

Bill Nye will speak on April 20th at 7:30 PM. He was the former host of “Bill Nye the Science Guy” on PBS-TV.

Healey says a committee helps arrange for  the speakers to  come each year to the Weinberg. “The challenge is actually selecting the folks and negotiations go on from there in trying to find the right date. If we can’t find the date, then we’ll move on to another selection,” he says.

Tickets for Weinberg Center members will go on sale on Thursday, August 11th. The general public can being buying tickets on Thursday, August 18th.
