Judge Rules Man Not Criminal Responsible For Shooting His Wife

He’s been released from jail.

WESTMINSTER, Md. (AP) – A man whom a judge ruled was not criminally responsible for shooting his wife in the neck has been released from jail.

The Baltimore Sun reports http://bsun.md/2b4hcDj that 43-year-old Keith Sluder of New Windsor entered an Alford plea to assault Monday in Carroll County Circuit Court. In an Alford plea, the defendant maintains he is innocent, but acknowledges prosecutors have enough evidence to convict him.
Prosecutors and defense lawyers said Sluder was not criminally responsible. The judge agreed.

Sluder’s attorney, Lawrence Greenberg, tells The Sun that his client was using Chantix, a prescription drug to help with smoking cessation. Greenberg says the drug caused a chemical imbalance.

In November 2014, prosecutors said, Sluder shot his wife, Lura, in their home. She was treated and released at a hospital.
