Tablets Available for Residents Who Can’t Use Standard Telephones

Md Relay began accepting applications on Monday.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) – Low-income Marylanders who are unable to use standard telephones can now apply for free tablets to help them communicate with others.

Gov. Larry Hogan said in a statement Monday that Maryland Relay, a state service, is now accepting applications through the Maryland Accessible Telecommunications program.

Residents who meet financial requirements and don’t use standard phones due to their hearing status, speaking difficulties, low vision, low mobility or cognitive factors can apply. Once they are approved, applicants will be evaluated to ensure they receive the equipment best suited for them.

The tablets will come pre-loaded with software, including video chat or captioned telephone programs, to assist with telecommunication.

The Board of Public Works approved the addition of tablets to the program in June and distribution of the tablets starts this month.
