New Market Man Arrested For Fleeing From A Crash Scene With A Toddler

He was apprehended  Sunday in a field.


New Market, Md (KM)  Frederick County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested a New Market man on Sunday evening after he fled the scene of a hit and run. Samuel J. McKean, 36, is charged with reckless endangerment, obstructing and hindering, neglect of a minor, driving under the influence of alcohol, making a false statement to a State Official, reckless driving, negligent driving and other traffic offenses.

Authorities say around 8:25 PM, deputies were dispatched to the 7000 block of Woodville Road for a hit and run. McKean, who was traveling northbound at the time, had cross the center line of the roadway, and struck another vehicle with his Nissan Frontier. The  vehicle that was struck was preparing back out of a driveway.

He continued on after the collision.

McKean abandoned his vehicle after two of its tires were completely shredded. He fled into a nearby field with his four-year-old son.

After a search with a police canine, McKean was located and taken into custody. His four-year-old son had scratches and cuts on his legs from his father carrying through the thick brush.

McKean was taken to the Adult Detention Center for processing.
