Stolen Firearm Located During Traffic Stop

Frederick man charged with weapons offenses.

Frederick, Md (KM)  A Frederick man is charged with firearms offenses following a traffic stop over the weekend.

Richard L. Thomas, 19, was arrested early Saturday  in the 500 block of Himes Avenue in Frederick. He’s charged with possession of a stolen firearm, carrying a firearm on his person, carrying a firearm in a vehicle, possession of a regulated firearm by a prohibited in individual, possession of a regulated firearm by a minor and possession of ammunition by a prohibited person.

The Sheriff’s Office says a traffic stop was initiated at around 12:48 AM in the 500 block of Himes Avenue in Frederick. The operator failed to stop at a stop line at the intersection with Mansion Drive, according to deputies.

Authorities say two of the four occupants were acting nervous and a police canine was called to the scene to do a sniff.

After the dog gave a positive alert, deputies made contact with Thomas, who they say had a loaded semi-automatic handgun on his person. The serial number was checked, and authorities say the weapon was one reported stolen by the Dover, Delaware Police Department.

Marijuana was also located on one of the other occupants.

Thomas was taken to the Adult Detention Center for processing.

The handgun and the marijuana were seized and placed on property at the Sheriff’s Office.
