Green Party Candidate For US Senate Visits Mt. Airy, Frederick

Dr. Martha Flowers says she wants to improve health coverage for Americans.

Frederick, Md. (KM)  You may not know it, but the Green Party has a candidate running in the US Senate Race in Maryland. Dr. Martha Flowers is a physician  and mother of three who decided to take the plunge.

She paid a visit to Mount Airy and Frederick on Wednesday as part of a statewide tour.  Because the Green Party doesn’t accept corporate donations, Dr. Flowers says she’s making herself known by meeting people face to face. “People are looking for a change. They’re fed up with the status quo. I have a strong record of fighting for people’s issues, of working alongside them,” she said.

Dr. Flowers is a 30-year resident of Maryland. She’s a pediatrician and a mother of three. Dr. Flowers graduated from the University of Maryland Medical School in 1990, and completed her residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital in 1994. She left the practice of medicine in 2007 to advocate for improved Medicare for all. Since then, she has broadened her issues to include economic, racial and environmental justice issues, according to a news release from her campaign.

Dr. Flowers says she wants to expand Medicare to all Americans. She is also opposed to the Affordable Care Act. “It was really a transfer of hundred of billions of dollars of our tax dollars each year into the hands of the private insurance companies. But no guarantee in return that people who have health insurance will be able to use it to cover their health care needs,” says Dr. Flowers.

In addition, she also concerned about the concentration of wealth among the top 1% of the population. “Wealth inequality, the funneling of wealth up to the top is a big concern of mine,” says Dr. Flowers. “Providing services to communities where we can build up our strong local economy in a way that’s routed in our communities and supports the backbone of our economy which is really our small and medium-size businesses.”

Dr. Flowers will be in Hagerstown, Cumberland and Frostburg on Thursday, September 22nd. Then she’ll travel to Thurmont, Taneytown, Westminster and Hunt Valley on Friday, September 23rd. On Saturday, September 24th, Dr. Flowers will be in Belair, Havre de Grace, Elkton and Chestertown. On Sunday, September 25th, she will be heading to the Eastern Shore to visit Crisfield, Princess Anne, Salisbury and Easton. Dr. Flowers will take a tour of southern and central Maryland on Monday, September 26th by touring Lusby/Solomon’s, LaPlata, College Park and Largo. Finally, she will wrap up her tour on Tuesday, September 27th in Bowie, Rockville and Gaithersburg.
