Man Who Died In Small Plane Crash Tues. Identified

He was the only person on the aircraft when it crashed.

LAYTONSVILLE, Md. (AP) – Montgomery County authorities have identified a man who died in a small plane crash.

Police say 78-year-old William Hughes was the pilot and sole occupant of an aircraft that crashed in a field near a small airport on Tuesday.

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue spokesman Pete Piringer said Tuesday that the crash occurred just after 6:15 p.m. in a field off Laytonsville Road near Hawkins Creamery Road and close to the Davis Airport.

Firefighters responded to the field to battle a blaze.

First responders searched for other victims but could find none, leading them to conclude that Hughes was alone on the flight.

The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating.
