Public meetings will be held to discuss the plan.
FREDERICK, Md. (AP) – An advisory panel is making scores of recommendations for enhancing and protecting the Monocacy River corridor in Frederick and Carroll counties.
The Monocacy River Citizens’ Advisory Board issued the draft management plan Thursday. It’s the first update of a 27-year-old management plan that was created as part of a state scenic river designation in 1974.
The document makes 77 recommendations for preserving historical and cultural resources, protecting the river ecology and enhancing recreational opportunities.
They include creating a community-based “riverkeeper,” similar to the existing Potomac Riverkeeper Network, which uses public campaigns and lawsuits to fight water pollution. The Monocacy is a Potomac River tributary.
The panel has scheduled public meetings Nov. 7 in Taneytown and Nov. 9 in Frederick to discuss the plan.
