Investigators Say Excessive Speed A Factor In A Crash Wed. In Middletown

They also say alcohol was NOT a factor.

Middletown, Md. (KM) The investigation into the vehicle crash Wednesday along Hollow Road near Layla Drive in Middletown continues, but the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office says excessive speed was a factor in this collision.

The operator of a Jeep Grand Cherokee identified as Austin E.Atherton, 17, of Smithsburg, was ejected after the vehicle failed to negotiate a right curve, left the roadway, struck a culvert and overturned. He was medivaced to University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore where he’s listed in stable condition.

Two passengers in the vehicle, Nathan Fredericks, 15, and Tyler Ferris, 16, were transported by ambulance to Meritus Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. Both have been released.

The two teens are from Smithsburg.

Authorities say alcohol is not a factor in this crash.

The investigation is being handled by the Dfc. Gregory Morton with the Sheriff’s Office Traffic Unit. Anyone who has information on this collision is asked to contact Dfc Morton at 301-600-3743.
