SHA Offering Reflective Vests for Halloween Night to Help With Visibility

Reflective vests for Halloween can be picked up at the Frederick shop between Wednesday and Friday this week from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

FREDERICK, Md. (KR)  Officials with the Maryland State Highway Administration want ‘trick-or-treaters’ to be seen on Halloween night. Spokesman Charlie Gischlar says the agency will, once again, lend out reflective vests to children and their chaperons.

He says the vests can be picked up at the Frederick shop between Wednesday and Friday this week from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

“Well you know, you’re dealing with a very excited kid, we were all there at one time, and then you put sugar on top of that and they’re very ready to go. So we’re just trying to heighten the safety aspect of Halloween and give drivers an extra chance to see the pedestrians,” said Gischlar.

He’s reminding parents to also tell their kids to look both ways before crossing a street.

“Make sure you’re paying close attention, particularly around areas where kids could pop out between two cars. They don’t know when they’re little like that to cross at marked cross walks. I hope they do, but there are “unpredictables.” So just be very careful and slow your speeds down and pay attention to the road,” said Gischlar.

He also says motorists need to make sure they stop for pedestrians, and stay alert during peak trick-or-treating hours, which is between 4 and and 9 p.m.
