Frederick City To Conduct Controlled Burn Thurs. In Watershed Area

It’s not near any homes or structures.

Frederick, Md. (KM)  A controlled burn is scheduled for Thursday at the City  of Frederick Watershed property off of Gambrill Park Road. Officials say the purpose is to restore a pitch pine that’s about 90-years old and at the end of its life span. If it’s not burned, the city says it will likely die out from this area.

Smoke will be observed on Catoctin Mountain, but the city says it will be low, controlled flame. Maryland Natural Resources fire personnel will be on hand, and pumper trucks will be available to pull water from a nearby pond if necessary.

No homes or other buildings are in this area.

Gambrill Park Road will be closed at the junction with Fishing Creek Road and Gate A-six. All trails in that northeast portion of the watershed will also be closed.

A decision to rescheduled the burn is expected to be made if it rains.
