Frederick Man Given 16-Years For Role In Stabbing

Prosecutors say the victim ‘almost died.’

Frederick, Md (KM)  In Circuit Court on Thursday, a Frederick man was sentenced for his role in a stabbing last year.  Erick  Alejandro Cinque Menendez, 19, was given 40 years in prison, with all but 16 years suspended.

Menendez pleaded guilty on Tuesday to attempted 2nd-degree murder and participating in a criminal gang.

State’s Attorney Charlie Smith says Menendez was a member of the 18th Street Gang, and was involved in a fight with members of the MS 13 gang in December, 2015, in front of the Rockledge Plaza on West Patrick Street in Frederick. He says Menendez produced a knife and made an attempt to stab a juvenile. “The second attempt did connect and caused a really severe stab wound to his head and his neck area. He was obviously bleeding profusely and was rushed to Frederick Memorial Hospital. Almost died,” he said.

Menendez fled the scene.  But police were able to get suspect  information from witnesses, and  he  was apprehended shortly after the stabbing.

Smith says Menendez is not a US citizens and he will be deported back to his birth country, El Salvador, after he finishes serving his 16-year sentence.

“Judge {Theresa} Adams gave him 40 years in the Division of Correction with all but 16 suspended,” says Smith. “So we’re very happy with the sentence. It was a very serious attack. He’s a gang member. He deserves it.”
