FREDERICK, Md.(KR) On Monday, a bill called, Right to Try Act, was passed in the House of Delegates. Delegate Karen Lewis Young, said her bill will allow terminally ill patients access to potentially lifesaving clinical trial treatments that have passed Phase 1 of the FDA approval process.
Young said, the bill is now on its way to the Senate.
“This bill has passed in 33 states. We have had the benefit of trying to use the best of the best. We think that the language in our bill addresses many of the concerns from the other states. It’s very bipartisian legislation,” said Young.
She said admendments were made to the bill after it failed to pass in the House last year.
“It can take ten to fifteen years to go through the FDA approval process, which is the main reason this whole Right to Try movement got started,” said Young.
She said patients who qualify for the FDA’s clinical trials program are not eligible for Right to Try.
