HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) – Authorities say a Hagerstown man stabbed another man with a hatchet and is now facing charges.

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office says in a statement that 23-year-old Markiann Oneill Bishopness Butcher is charged with second-degree attempted murder, first- and second-degree assault, and reckless endangerment as the result of an altercation that turned physical Wednesday afternoon.

The statement says Butcher stabbed the victim with a hatchet behind a Hagerstown Dollar Tree store. The victim, who hasn’t been identified, suffered two lacerations to his stomach, a deep 6-inch laceration to his left forearm and a deep stab wound to his right hip.

The victim was taken to Meritus Medical Center, underwent surgery and was in stable condition Thursday morning.

It’s unclear if Butcher has an attorney.
