Roadwork Begins This Week In Emmitsburg

It’s a reconstruction of Main Street (Rt. 140)

Emmitsburg, Md. (KM). The Maryland State Highway Administration is starting a $3-million road project in Emmitsburg this week. “We’re going to reconstructing Maryland 140–the main street appropriately called Main Street–between Creamery Road and Timbermill Run in Emmitsburg. That’s right in the heart of town,” says spokesman Charlie Gischlar.

The work will include constructing sidewalks compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act. “ADA compliant basically means it has be to be five-feet wide and of the same material,” says Gischlar.

Other work includes installing street lights, adding drainage inlets and pipes, putting in crosswalks and paving and restriping Route 140. SHA estimates all of the work will be completed by the summer of 2018.

Because this work could disrupt the lives and livelihoods of Emmitsburg, residents,  Gischlar says SHA is working with the town to keep the disruptions to a minimum. “We did work in conjunction with the stakeholders, the town officials, the merchants, everybody there,” he says. “There’s basically work happening Monday through Friday between 9 and 3,” he says.

It’s going to be a tight work area. If you can, during the work hours between nine and three, if you can circumvent it and use alternate routes, that’s great. If not, give yourself some time and go slow through that work zones because there’s going to be traffic shifts and that type of thing happening in that area with flagging operations,” says Gischlar.
SHA says more than 8800 motorists use that portion of Route 140 each day.
