Local Lawmaker Against Movement To Change Maryland State Flag

Those behind the movement say there are Confederate symbols on the flag.

There is an effort in Maryland to change the state flag. Those behind the movement say there are Confederate symbols on the flag.

State Senator Michael Hough disagrees.

“A surpremely stupid idea. Yes, I’ve heard it and it shows that the people that are promoting taking down the statues, they really won’t stop until they’ve erased as much of the history and culture of this nation as possible and it’s really seeing the stuff that they’re doing,” said

Hough said those behind this effort are historically incorrect.

“The Maryland flag, the red and white and black and gold represent the maternal and paternal seals of the Calvert family and who founded Maryland. It shows that one, the people that are advocating for this don’t understand history and then that this whole movement has run a muck,” said Hough.

Hough feels by taking down these Confederate monuments and statues we are losing a piece of history and valuable teaching tools for younger generations – how the country made bad decisions about slavery and overcame them.
