Ft. Detrick To Conduct Exercise On Post Thurs.

It will involve a suspicious package.

Frederick, Md (KM) The US Army Garrison at Fort Detrick will conduct an exercise on Thursday near the Logistics Readiness Center and other locations around the post. Officials say the exercise will feature a response to a suspicious package. The exercise will evaluate the mail-handling process on post, along with communication synchronization and emergency response, according to a Fort Detrick news release.

Installation officials say the exercise is designed to review the operational capability of emergency management systems in a stress-filled environment with actual response conditions.

“Ideally, a full scale exercise should test and evaluate procedures and plans with respect to response and recovery capabilities,” says Mary Chizmar, Directorate of Plans, Training, Mobilization and Security. She says these exercises  help the installation examine gaps in its responses, and work to correct them before an actual emergency takes place.

The US Army Installation Management Command requires these annual exercises to test Fort Detrick’s emergency procedures. In the past, exercise scenarios have included highway crashes, a chemical release, tornadoes and an active shooter.
