Authorities Urge Caution While Hiking After Fatal Fall In Washington County

The man fell to his death last Friday while hiking at Maryland Heights last Friday.

 Last Friday an 18 year-old man fell to his death while hiking at Maryland Heights. A popular spot in Washington County that over looks Historic Harpers Ferry, West Virginia.

Maryland Department of Natural Resources Police spokeswoman, Candy Thomson, said everyone should take proper precautions while hiking.

“Knowing your surroundings, knowing where there are ledges and drop-offs, knowing where you are,” Thomson said.

She said never hike alone and always wear the right shoes for hiking.

“I have seen people out there hiking in flip-flops and water sandals, and those kind of shoes sometimes lead to falls or ankle twists. Then you have a situation where you need to be rescued, and it’s not easy for the victims, and it’s not easy for the people trying to get out there and render assistance,” Thomson said.

Authorities encourage everyone hike with a fully charged cell phone and to tell others of your hiking route before you head out. If you don’t return, they can alert authorities. .
