Smithsburg Man Arrested After Car Chase

After driving over stop sticks, the suspect continued to lead police on a chase.

Hagerstown, Md (DG) – A Smithsburg man was arrested early Wednesday morning after he lead police on a vehicle chase.

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office reports deputies saw a green Subaru Forrester traveling on West Franklin Street Wednesday around 12:30 AM. They recognized the Subaru matching one that had been reported stolen earlier in the day. The registration was checked and police confirmed the Subaru was stolen.

Deputies tried to stop the vehicle on West Franklin Street near Nottingham Road. The Subaru slowed and pulled to the right shoulder, but before it came to a complete stop, the driver accelerated and eventually drove onto the southbound lanes of Interstate 81.

The Subaru driver nearly caused an accident when he passed by Halfway Boulevard. The vehicle took the exit for westbound Halfway Boulevard and headed towards Hopewell Road.

A deputy was able to set up spike strips and the Subaru ran over them. The Subaru then continued onto West Washington Street, where the driver ran off the roadway into a corn field and struck a tree.

The driver ran from the car and into the woods. A K-9 unit was called to the scene and the driver was eventually taken into custody.

The suspect has been identified as 42-year-old Adam Monk. He was transported to Meritus Medical Center for treatment of the bites he sustained from the K-9 Unit.

After Monk was released, he was charged with motor vehicle theft, theft, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
