Chip Jewell To Retire As Deputy Chief, Frederick County Fire & Rescue

He’s been an active volunteer since 1969.

 


Frederick, Md (KM) A man whose been associated with Frederick County Fire and Rescue for many years is stepping down. Deputy Chief Chip Jewell announced that he’s retiring at the end of December. He started his career as a dispatcher with Frederick County Central Alarm in 1972, and also worked in communications for Montgomery County Fire and Rescue. Jewell also worked for 20 years in the insurance industry as an agent and insurance education instructor.

Jewell came back to county government in 2003 as the first director of the Volunteer Fire and Rescue Service. He began work in 2006 as director of Department of Emergency Communications, and in 2014, was returned to volunteer services as the chief and director of the Division of Volunteer Fire and Rescue Service.

“I have truly been honored to serve the citizens of Frederick County as both volunteer and director of emergency communications, ” Jewel said in a statement. “Our county is so fortunate to have an excellent cadre of volunteers in our more than two dozen fire and rescue companies. Our dedicated members continue to meet the demands of training while responding to an increasing volume of emergency incidents. I am grateful for the many years of support form the leadership in each company and the officers of the Frederick County Volunteer Fire and Rescue Association.”

Jewell says he will continue as assistant chief of the Libertytown Volunteer Fire Department, and a life member at both Libertytown and Junior Fire Company Number 2. He says he will keep on working as a field instructor at the University of Maryland/Maryland Fire-Rescue Institute.
