Fire Destroys Barn Near Adamstown

Fire officials say the building is  a ‘total loss.’

Adamstown, Md (KM). Fire destroyed an equipment storage shed in the Adamstown area Wednesday afternoon. Mike Smallwood, the Chief of the Carroll Manor Fire Company, says the call went at around 11:52 AM  in the 1900 block of Greenfield Road, which is the Waverly Farms property, for a barn fire. “Units arrived on the scene two minutes later and found the barn fully involved in fire,” he says.

Fighting the flames presented some challenges, according to Chief Smallwood. “Due to the nature of where it is–hydrants are kind of sporadic out here–so a tanker task force was called to bring in additional water trucks for the fire fighting efforts,” says Smallwood.

Fire fighters spent almost an hour bringing the flames under control. There were no injuries.

Chief Smallwood says the structure is considered a total loss. “The building collapsed in on itself,” he says.

He says the damage could be substantial. “The property owners are estimated over a million dollars with the equipment and the building,” says Smallwood.

The barn contained only farm equipment, no animals.

The County Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause of the fire.

Chief Smallwood says personnel and apparatus from Frederick, Montgomery and Loudon Counties responded to help put out the flames. He says about 50 fire fighters were at the scene.
